Understanding Door Handing for Smart Locks in Australia
When choosing a smart lock, one of the most common questions is: “What hand is my door?” Getting this right is essential to ensure your lock fits and operates correctly.
What is Door Handing?
Door handing refers to the way your door opens — whether it swings left or right, and whether it opens inwards or outwards. This determines which lock models will fit and how they’ll be installed.
The Australian Method
In Australia, the handing of a door is always determined from the outside (the exterior side).
Ask yourself two questions:
- Which side of the door is the lock on?
- Does the door open inwards or outwards?
Always stand outside when checking your door handing.
The Four Handing Options
- Left-Hand Inward (LHI) – Lock on the left, door swings inwards.
- Right-Hand Inward (RHI) – Lock on the right, door swings inwards.
- Left-Hand Outward (LHO) – Lock on the left, door swings outwards.
- Right-Hand Outward (RHO) – Lock on the right, door swings outwards.
When to Specify Handing
Not every smart lock requires handing. Many models are reversible and can be installed on either side of the door. However, some locks and handles are handed products, which means you’ll need to specify whether you need LH (Left Hand) or RH (Right Hand) when ordering.
Examples from our range include:
- Lockwood Code Handle LH Keyless Lockset (SS)
- Lockwood Code Handle RH Keyless Lockset (SS)
- Borg BL2000 Series – LH Latch Only (28mm)
- Borg BL2000 Series – RH Latch Only (28mm)
These are classic examples where handing must be specified before ordering.
Industry Differences
Carpenters, builders, and door manufacturers sometimes determine handing differently. They may stand inside a room instead of outside or look at the hinges when determining left or right, which can cause confusion and errors when ordering hardware.
In locksmithing and the smart lock industry, the standard is clear: ➡️ Always determine handing from the exterior.
Common Mistakes With Door Handing
- Standing inside instead of outside.
- Assuming all locks are reversible.
- Using US guides (which label handing differently).
Quick Tip for Smart Locks
- Stand outside the door.
- Note the Lock side.
- Check the swing direction.
- Provide LH or RH only if the product requires handing.
Why It Matters
Ordering the wrong handing can mean delays, additional costs, or even having to swap out your product. Getting it right the first time ensures your new smart lock will fit perfectly and operate smoothly.
